I felt that I didn’t want to be in show business anymore. I felt that I wanted to be a farmer. I was milking cows and shoveling terrible stuff and working all day. By the end of the day, all I wanted was my tap shoes – I thought, ‘What am I doing? I better get back where I belong on the stage where we work at night and can sleep late!

‘WHENEVER I have an anniversary it seems like I get crazy,” laughed Joan Myers Brown over the phone last week from her studio in West Philadelphia. She expected to be working into the wee hours of the morning – and not for the only time that week – to prepare for the horde of dancers, teachers and students expected to stream into town for this week’s International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference. Performances for 5 female and male dancers created by Ohad Naharin premiers this week at Suzanne Dellal in Tel Aviv Israel. The piece was originally created for 5 women in 2008 and has been set on 5 men in 2010. You might have to go twice to see both the women and the men perform but if you don’t live in Israel and can’t go at all like most of us check out this preview video.

A Small Apology and Some Major Dancing
Nov 6th, 2009 by Ben Wardell
Sorry it’s been a while since the last post. Hubbard Street is on tour abroad (Israel for the last two weeks) and the internet situation has been iffy at best. But here’s hoping there will be time and internet for more regular posts in the coming weeks.
Now for a fun first post back, HERE is the YouTube page of Jonathan Alsberry , dancer with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company and founder of KDT, which is short for Kuntemporary Dance Theater. KDT takes some of the best dancers from NYC and beyond and films them having fun being straight up fierce. It’s definitely worth a YouTube subscription, because if you like dancing these videos will never fail to brighten your day. For example:
NYTimes Front Page What’s Missing?
Oct 26th, 2009 by GreenDancers
I think most dancers make it a habit to check the New York Times Website for articles about and relating to dance. It is one of the most reliable sources for information on dance, even if the reviewers can be one sided in their opinions of the overall dance world.
If NYTimes is one the most reliable sources for dance, then where is the link to dance on the online homepage? It should be under the Arts section of the paper but it is missing. Does this mean that of all the Arts, dance is the one that people reading the times care about least?
Dance is a funny art form for people to relate to, possibly because unlike many of the other arts it is less accessible in many ways. For example it is hard for a dancer to put on a one man show for an hour in a pub without ruining their bodies. It is hard to get dance to conform to a small space unless it is mininal. So maybe there is less of it out there because fewer venues can really present dance. This does not mean that the art of dance should be looked down upon. It just means we have to figure out new ways of presenting it so that it can be more accessible.
This aside, dance as an art form deserves more credit than it is given and for it to be left out of the art sidebar of the Nytimes is just another blow to the continually disregarded art form. I hope the NYtimes will recognize this soon and add it to their art sidebar.
